Just finished this remarkable novel and I was looking for someone who had, like me, a proper need to identify a link with the historical period in which the book was written. Vietnam is certainly a good point. Although I am so sure whether the author might have had the vision of what was happening so clearly to inspire him that particular narrative. After all in 1966 the war was not so well documenter as it was just a few years later, by Hollywood movies. <br />I find it rather visionary in its Roman empire like setting of the city of Sade and decadent.
